From the banning of alcohol to the far stretches of the Al Capone’s actions, the 20s were a important decade in American history. Starting before the Roaring Twenties, the United States ratified the 18th Amendment of the Constitution to ban the sale of alcohol. During the 1920s, many people struggled because of the enqual distribution of wealth. Organized crime went up because many wanted to drink alcohol, but it was illegal to acquire or sell alcohol. In 1921, over 75 percent of people lived in dry counties with Temperance Reformers. Temperance Reformers were people who wanted to fight against alcohol consumption. The reformers' main goal was for the consumption of alcohol to be illegal and the law to enforce this goal. Izzy Einstein and Moe Smith, were two undercover agents for the Federal Prohibition Bureau. They busted people who were collecting, selling, and consuming alcohol and caught those criminals. These two officers busted many cases, which invovled secret bars and speakeasies. They mainly caught people by disguising as customers looking for alcohol and asking for the “Real stuff.” Then they would arresst the wrongdoers once the alcohol was revealed. Izzy and Moe's costumes included: grave diggers, farmers, football players, judges and many other disguises. Another big part of the 1920s was Al Capone. Starting in the 20s, Al Capone went on to become the most famous gangster in history. Al Capone was feared all around the country for his bootlegging, his multi-million dollar gambling organization, and his brutality. One of his most violent and well-known actions was the St. Valentine’s Massacre. Al Capone's gangsters dresses up as cops and gunned down members of another crime family. On June 5, 1931 the U.S. Government finally prosecuted him on 22 counts of income tax evasion.
